We are Panda Instruments, a team of entrepreneurs and product designers looking to create sustainable electronic accessories that are also well designed and functional.

When our journey began we took a look at the current keyboard market and asked a simple question

"What can we do to take something as fundamental to everyday labor as a keyboard and give it an eco-friendly design?"

We decided to start our quest by looking at materials. 

Wood alone creates environmental issues, which led us to the bamboo path. Bamboo grows swiftly, and has been used for centuries in everything from construction to food. It is one of natures wonder products. 

We found some had already entered the bamboo keyboard market, but few were looking at creating tools for people that lived and breathed on their computers.

We want to create the type of devices that programmers, writers, and other heavy users delight in. This includes making the keyboard resistant to the issues presented by human oils from the hand. 

We are bringing the same mix of values to our other products, looking for an intersection of high design, eco-friendiliness, and function, at a price that allows for everyone to enjoy a great product.

How We are Different

There are several makers of bamboo keyboards on the market and I think it is important to layout how we differ:

1) We are not just repurposing the designs of your standard discount keyboard. We are trying to merge typing functionality with high design

2) We are looking to make a sustainable product in two senses;

a) It is made from bamboo which is a quick growing natural resource, as well as hand-crafting the items. Compared to petroleum based plastic keyboards, it is easy to see where we come out ahead.

b) The finish we are going to use will make this keyboard and mouse a long term purchase, keeping it out of the landfill. The concept for the finish we are going to use came to me one day while playing bass, wood absorbs human oils, but for centuries musicians have found work arounds to keep their precious instruments beautiful. This is why you can walk into museums and see ancient Chineese bamboo flutes.
